Guitar Scales Explained: Major, Minor & Pentatonic

You play scale positions. Boxes, memorized shapes, probably your pentatonic first. But do you know what’s INSIDE those shapes? One thing only: a formula of distances. And once you know it, everything unlocks: your pentatonic reveals itself as a lightened major scale, and there’s a major scale for every starting note, twelve possible notes thus twelve major scales: all follow the same single recipe. We measured the distances with intervals, those distances between notes. Now we use them to build.

The essentials in 30 seconds

A scale is a selection of notes chosen from the 12, following a formula of intervals. The major scale follows the formula Tone, Tone, semitone, Tone, Tone, Tone, semitone: applied from C, it gives C, D, E, F, G, A, B, the seven natural notes. Since the formula is always the same, just change the starting note to transpose the scale from any note. The major pentatonic scale is that same scale without its two tension notes (degrees IV and VII), five notes instead of seven.

1. What is a scale: a formula, not a list of notes

The number one mistake self-taught players make with scales: treating them as lists of notes to memorize. C major equals “C D E F G A B”, G major equals another list, D major equals yet another… Twelve lists to learn? No.

A scale is a recipe of distances. The formula says: “start from a note, go up a tone, another tone, then a semitone…”. It doesn’t name any note. You choose the starting point, and the formula does the rest. One single recipe equals all twelve major scales.

The note from which you apply the formula gives its name to the scale: C major starts from C. We’ll call it simply the starting note of the scale. Its particular role (why everything seems to “return” to it), we’ll dig into in the article on tonality.

And one last thing before building: a scale gives you the vocabulary of a piece, the reservoir of notes that go well together. It doesn’t tell you what to do with them. Two very different melodies can come from the same scale: it’s your stock of words, not your sentence.

2. The major scale formula: W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Here it is, the most important recipe in Western music: Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half. On your guitar: 2 frets, 2 frets, 1 fret, 2 frets, 2 frets, 2 frets, 1 fret. Count: 2+2+1+2+2+2+1 = 12 semitones. The formula travels exactly one octave, and the 8th note brings you back to your starting note, one octave higher.

Applied from C, it selects C, D, E, F, G, A, B. The 7 natural notes, without a single sharp or flat: C major is the only major scale entirely “white”. And look where the two semitones of the formula fall: on E-F and B-C, exactly the natural semitones between E-F and B-C that we spotted with the notes. Nothing is coincidental.

A scale is not a list of notes: it’s a recipe of distances. Change the starting note, the recipe doesn’t change.

The second semitone of the formula deserves a moment of attention: it’s the one that links the 7th note to the octave (B to C, in C major). This note just below the starting note creates a tension that “calls” the return: it’s that little magnet that gives the major scale its resolved feeling, that settles nicely. Keep that in mind, it’s going to become an important character in the rest of the series.

3. The pentatonic revealed: a lightened major scale

Now, the revelation that directly concerns you. Your pentatonic, the one you’ve been playing for years, isn’t a separate scale. It’s the major scale with two notes removed: degrees IV and VII (in C: F and B).

And why does that make it so easy to make it sound good? Because by removing F and B, we also remove the tritone hiding between these two notes: the most unstable interval in the system, the one we encountered in the article on intervals. Without it, only notes that get along well with each other remain, in almost all circumstances. That’s the real secret of your pentatonic.

By removing degrees IV and VII, we remove the tritone. That’s why your pentatonic is so hard to make sound bad.

And your minor penta, then?

Important clarification, because the position you know best is probably the minor penta (the famous A “box”). Major penta and minor penta are relative: the same 5 notes, with a different center point. The A minor penta (A, C, D, E, G) contains exactly the same notes as the C major penta. You just change the note you land on.

And if you complete your A minor penta with its two missing notes (B and F), you get A, B, C, D, E, F, G: the natural minor scale of A. Same notes as C major, different center point. This phenomenon has a name, and it deserves its own visual:

Same 7 notes. The center changes, the color changes. The relative minor is always a minor third (3 semitones) below the major.

It’s called the relative minor: A minor is the relative of C major. Go down a minor third from any major, you’ll find its relative.

This game of “same notes, different center” goes much further than the relative minor: it’s the doorway to the modes, other formulas from the same notes. Everything in its time.

4. Transposing a scale: same formula, different starting point

Go back to the first visual and switch to G major. The formula selects: G, A, B, C, D, E… and F sharp. Not F. Why? Because the formula requires a whole step between the 6th and 7th note, and a semitone between the 7th and the octave. Natural F doesn’t respect these distances, F sharp does. The alterations of a scale aren’t capricious: they’re imposed by the formula.

This is also where the enharmonic spelling from the article on notes makes complete sense. F# and Gb, same fret on your neck. But in G major, only one spelling is correct: F#. The rule is simple: in a scale, each letter appears once and only once (C, D, E, F, G, A, B). The letter G being already taken by the starting note, the 7th note must be written with the letter F: F#. Context decides the spelling.

Educational tool, no trick: the slider is rigid. Black squares are the starting note and its octave, arcs mark wholes (W) and halves (H).

On the fretboard, transposing is a gift: you slide the same fingering shape and you get the scale from any note. Two frets higher, same sound, higher pitch. One adjustment to know: when your shape crosses the G and B strings, shift it one fret, those two strings are tuned differently from the others (we saw that with interval shapes).

Proof by your pentatonic: the same position 1 you know by heart, sliding along the neck. Change key, the box doesn’t deform by a millimeter:

Black squares are the roots: the one on the low E string gives the key name. Same system as the slider above: on the fretboard too, transposing equals sliding.

5. Building and playing a scale on guitar

Building C major note by note

On your A string: fret 3 is C. Apply the formula fret by fret: C (fret 3), D (5), E (7), F (8), G (10), A (12), B (14), C (15). Two frets, two frets, one fret… you HEAR the formula under your fingers. One single string is enough to understand: positions across strings are exactly the same logic, just folded to fit under your hand.

Finding your pentatonic within the major scale

Play your A minor penta position 1. Now add the two missing notes (B and F): you just played A natural minor, the same notes as C major. Your “box” wasn’t an island: it was a complete scale with two notes removed. Everything you’ve been playing for years just connected to theory.

Exercise: build the D major scale with the formula

Without looking above: start from D and apply W, W, H, W, W, W, H. Write down the 7 notes. Then check with the visual (D major button): you should find two sharps, F# and C#, and land back on D at the octave. If you have a doubt along the way, remember: each letter only once.

On your guitar: three challenges this week

Challenge 1. Build C major on your A string by counting the frets aloud (2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1). Then do the same from G, low E string fret 3. Same recipe, different starting point.

Challenge 2. Play your A minor penta, then replay it adding B and F. Hear what those two notes bring (and what their absence simplified).

Challenge 3. Write down D major and A major notes mentally with the formula. Check: D major has 2 sharps, A major has 3. If you find that, the formula is yours.

What is a scale in music?

A scale is a collection of notes selected from the 12 notes of the Western system, organized according to a formula of intervals. On guitar, a scale position is just that formula made visible under your fingers.

How do you build a major scale?

How do you transpose a scale to another key?

To transpose, you keep the same interval formula and simply change the starting note. Starting from G with the major formula, you get G, A, B, C, D, E, F sharp, G: the F becomes F sharp because the formula requires it. That’s why the same scale fingering can be moved on the fretboard: the sound stays identical, only the pitch changes. Knowing the formula allows you to play the major scale from any of the 12 notes without relearning new positions.

Why does the pentatonic scale work?

The major pentatonic scale is a major scale from which two notes have been removed: degrees IV and VII. In C, this gives C, D, E, G, A, without F or B. But these two notes form the tritone between them, the most unstable interval in the system. By removing them, only notes that sound good together in almost all circumstances remain, which explains why the pentatonic is so easy and safe for improvising.

What’s the difference between a major scale and a minor scale?

The major scale and minor scale are distinguished by their interval formula, thus by the placement of their whole steps and half steps. The major follows Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half and sounds bright. The natural minor follows Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole and sounds darker, notably due to its minor third. Both use the same 12 starting notes, but their different formula produces an opposite color.
