After this lesson, you will know how to find the key of any song, read a key signature, navigate the circle of fifths, and finally understand what your capo really does.<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"direct-answer\" id=\"essential\">\n  <h2>The Essential in 30 Seconds<\/h2>\n  <p><strong>Tonality<\/strong> is the system around which an entire piece is organized: a central note (the tonic, its home), a scale, and the hierarchy of attraction that makes everything return to this center. Saying that a piece is in C major means that C is this home: the scale used is that of C major, the chords are built on its degrees, and the cadences resolve to C. To find the key of a piece, we look for the resolution chord, the one that sounds finished and on which the piece rests: it is the tonic chord, degree I. A mode also has a central note, the modal center. The difference is gravity: in a mode, the home is there but the music floats around, it colors. Proof by the most ambiguous example there is: Am, F, C, G. These four chords are in C major&#8230; or in A minor. No accidentals, it is C major OR A minor. The key signature gives you a pair of candidates; it is the resolution that decides, as in the investigation above.<\/p>\n\n  <h3>The secret of minor tonality: the raised leading tone<\/h3>\n\n  <p>And here is the detail almost nobody explains. Natural minor has no leading tone: its seventh note is a whole step from the tonic, too far to create the magnet that makes real cadences. So minor tonality cheats: <strong>it raises this note by a half step<\/strong>. In A minor, G becomes G# (G sharp), and the dominant chord becomes&#8230; E <strong>major<\/strong> (E-G#-B), not E minor. Look for why.<\/div>\n    <p class=\"svg-caption\">The G# of the E major chord is the recreated leading tone: a half step from A, it &#8220;pulls&#8221; toward home. This is the harmonic minor scale in action. So if you come across an E major in a song in A minor, it is not an anomaly: it is the norm of tonal minor.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<!-- ============ H2 : circle of fifths ============ -->\n<section id=\"circle\">\n  <h2>4. The circle of fifths, the navigation tool for tonalities<\/h2>\n\n  <h3>One more sharp at each fifth<\/h3>\n\n  <p>Twelve major tonalities, each with its key signature: how to find your way? With a map. The <strong>circle of fifths<\/strong> arranges tonalities in a circle, each step rising by a perfect fifth (the stable interval from lesson 3). Clockwise: one more sharp at each step. Counterclockwise: one more flat. And the real secret of the map: <strong>two neighboring tonalities differ by only one accidental<\/strong>, thus share six of their seven notes. Same key signature, same note reservoir, two possible homes. The loop of the series closes: the relative minor of scales, the Aeolian of modes and the key signature pair of tonality are three faces of the same phenomenon.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n<!-- ============ H2 : capo ============ -->\n<section id=\"capo\">\n  <h2>5. The capo explained: changing key consciously<\/h2>\n\n  <h3>What capo at fret 2 really does<\/h3>\n\n  <p>Your capo is a transposing machine. Capo at fret 2, you play your C, F, G shapes (I-IV-V in C)&#8230; and out comes D, G, A: a I-IV-V in D major. Everything is raised by 2 half steps: the relationships between <a href=\"\/en\/music-theory-for-guitar\/scale-degrees-guitar\/\">degrees I, IV and V of a tonality<\/a> have not moved an inch, only the home changed address. Capo at fret 5: your C shapes sound in F major. Fret 7: in G major. You have been changing keys for years without knowing it; now you know exactly which one.<\/p>\n\n  <p>And for vocabulary: moving the entire piece as a block like that is <strong>transposing<\/strong> (one home, from start to finish). Changing home in the middle of the piece, like that last chorus that rises by a tone and gives you chills again, is <strong>modulating<\/strong>. Transposition, your capo masters it; modulation is the next playground.<\/p>\n\n  <h3>Exercise: find the key of 3 songs<\/h3>\n\n  <p>Take three songs you play. For each one, conduct the investigation: where does it rest? What accidentals recur? Do the chords fit the degrees of the candidate? It cannot be reduced to the scale: it is the complete framework that brings together the scale, degrees, chords and cadences around the same center, the tonic. When a piece is in G major, this means that G is this center, that its chords come from the degrees of G major and that its phrases resolve to G. Two neighboring tonalities on the circle differ by only one accidental and thus share six of their seven notes, which makes the passage from one to the other very natural.
